Do Natural health remedies work? Perhaps you have had chronic migraine since you were young. And to ease your pain, you’ve visited dozens of doctors and been prescribed drugs like Maxalt, Imitrex and other “triptan-class” medications that cure migraine by constricting the swollen blood vessels in the brain that lead to the headache. But what if the drugs did nothing for you or you ended up having bad side effects that are worse than the migraine? What else can you do?

For one thing, you can try using a natural remedy. Natural health remedies part of alternative medicine which is quite different from traditional Western medicine. Oriental ancient civilizations have long made use of natural remedies. Until now, there are Asian healers who make use of herbs, plants, bark, roots, minerals and other natural substances to ease disease symptoms like pain to cure illnesses and prevent diseases. Aside from herbal medicine, acupressure, acupuncture, biofeedback and homeopathy also fall under alternative medicine.

Safety Issues Regarding Natural Health Remedies

The safety of a natural remedy depends on the product you use, as well as the level of skill of the person who applies or prepares the product. Natural remedy products, which include herbal medicine, are not standardized by the FDA, and some practitioners of alternative medicine are not required to uphold a certain standard of performance. Some of these practitioners also do not have a license. Majority of them learned about these alternative healing methods through word of mouth, by reading books on the specific topic, and watching demonstrations. Check out this video:

The FDA advises against the use of natural remedy products to self-medicate serious illnesses, particularly illnesses whose symptoms do not disappear after awhile. The use of these medicines on pregnant or nursing mothers, children or pets is also not recommended. You should tell your doctor if you are using a natural remedy to prevent it from having an unwanted interaction with another drug or laboratory test. If using a natural remedy results in side effects, discontinue use of the drugs and consult with a doctor immediately.

Make sure to buy your natural remedy products from a legitimate, trustworthy company.  And obviously, check first if your acupuncture practitioner has a history of happy clients who can provide references and prove that the acupuncture practitioner really is capable. Be sure to know the ingredients of your herbal remedy, as well as its purpose before you use it. If you have issues with chemical dependency, avoid using tinctures since these substances have alcohol content which may cause a problem for you.

It is not wise for you to self-medicate using natural health remedies unless you have done the research and fully understand its likely effects. You can use the consultation that trustworthy online herbal companies provide, along with their tips on how to use their products properly. To be safe, they will most likely send instruction packets with the products you order.

It may also be a good idea to buy a book on natural health remedies and herbal medicine since there are a lot of plants, herbs and berries that can be fatal when ingested. Biofeedback probes can be ineffective if not put in the right place while acupuncture may end up being too painful. Alternative medicine shouldn’t have harmful side effects, so if it does, then you are doing something wrong.
